Basically, the arrow indicates how you're going to jump(as a ratio of amount x to amount y). Space to jump, a and d to swap directions. Heres the key bit: You are one jump out of sync. You set your next jump by pressing space, and when you press space you are launched in the direction of your last set jump(Indicated by the gray arrow).
